Legal AI expert has a warning when it comes to new regulations
The fact that over half of people in the UK want regulation to help safeguard jobs against AI will not come as a surprise to many.
The recent explosion of interest in AI around the world has created a regulatory and policy minefield for businesses implementing the technology. But the AI race isn’t going to slow down any time soon, and there is a clear need for more robust, and ultimately more consistent, regulatory guidance which is informed by AI experts.
Regulators would do well to remember that AI technology is not always “coming for jobs” and can indeed be an aid for employees. Historically, the introduction of new technologies in the workplace has actually created jobs and spurred new forms of innovation, as staff are freed to spend more time on high value tasks. So, when it comes to developing regulations, emphasis should be put on encouraging the use of AI to help augment employee workflow and not outright job replacement.
