Domino & Aston University Reveal Findings on the Future of FMCG Manufacturing

Domino Printing Sciences (Domino), in collaboration with the Advanced Services Group (ASG), has released a new whitepaper that explores how suppliers can better support fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturers in navigating the challenges of the future.

The research-backed whitepaper presents insights from a qualitative study conducted with FMCG businesses and industry experts from diverse sectors and geographies. It identifies how suppliers can play a vital role in helping manufacturers respond to mounting pressures in an increasingly unpredictable landscape.

Dr Kawal Kapoor, Lead Researcher, ASG, commented: “As the factory of the future takes shape, we believe that our ongoing research offers suppliers a grounded view of how customer expectations are changing and how to adapt, respond, and lead through the opportunities of the decade ahead.”

As FMCG manufacturers contend with labour shortages, mounting sustainability pressures, and a growing need for digital capability, the role of suppliers is shifting. The research, commissioned by Domino, demonstrates how suppliers must evolve to become agile, customer-focused partners capable of delivering integrated, service-led solutions that drive long-term performance.

“The FMCG factory of the future will look very different,” said Kate Rattigan, Senior Product Manager – Advanced Services, Domino. “Our work with the Advanced Services Group is helping us understand what really matters to our customers and is shaping the way we think about new service development, ensuring we continue to design and deliver future-ready solutions that meet real-world needs.”

Key themes identified in the whitepaper include the increasing value placed on flexibility, the shift from products to services, and the need for suppliers to offer outcome-based models that prioritise uptime, performance, and peace of mind, enabling customers to concentrate on their core business.

“As a business, we are constantly challenging our own assumptions to stay aligned with customer needs and emerging trends,” added Rattigan. “This means embracing digital transformation, driving innovation, and being bold in the way we shape our products and services.”

Aligned with Domino’s strategic shift from product provider to service partner, the whitepaper supports the company’s commitment to helping customers achieve their sustainability goals, reduce inefficiencies, and harness data more effectively. It also affirms Domino’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), particularly around responsible consumption and innovation.
