Unite the Union to Speak Up for Greater Workforce Diversity at the Microlise Transport Conference

In a presentation set to ignite intrigue amongst the transport and logistics community at the Microlise Transport Conference, Unite the Union, Britain and Ireland’s largest union, will outline specific steps transport operators could take to shape the future workforce.

In a speech titled Changing Faces: The Future of the Driver Workforce, Unite National Officer Adrian Jones will seek to answer the big questions, asking who today’s drivers are; and what the need for change is.

Adrian has been a National Officer at Unite since 2012 and has specific responsibility for commercial road transport and logistics. He says the industry is struggling: “For years the industry has been fishing in the same pond hoping to catch something different.  The answer to the challenge is to be creative and challenge the boundaries of what the industry and employers currently offer to create a diverse and dynamic workforce.”

During the presentation Adrian will demonstrate how today’s workforce is not representative of the working age population and try to explore how the industry can become more diverse. There will be specific suggestions of steps that operators and employers can take and the role that Unite can play in shaping the future workforce.

The Microlise Transport Conference has established itself as the industry’s premier conference, offering an exciting and engaging programme of speakers, complimented by four workshop areas, an exhibition featuring innovative industry suppliers and excellent networking opportunities.

“Drivers are so fundamental to the success of the transport and logistics sector. We’re excited to have their voice represented on the big stage at our conference. Unite is an influential voice in domestic and international politics – I look forward to hearing Adrian’s practical tips; as well as Unite’s strategic vision for how we can all increase workforce diversity and strengthen our industry together,” said Nadeem Raza, Microlise Chief Executive Officer.

Alongside Unite; confirmed speakers include Google, the DVSA, the UK’s Senior Traffic Commissioner, and the Road Haulage and Logistics All-Party Parliamentary Group; with more announcements due soon.

Aimed at those working in management or operational roles within fleet operators, the Microlise Transport Conference is curated to feature interesting and relevant content for professionals working in the road transport sector regardless of fleet size, industry or which technologies they have in place.

The one-day conference is free to attend, with a programme designed to provide valuable insights to delegates that inform their business and strategic decisions.
